Finally, the volunteers washed a mountain of dishes! The volunteers for the event were: Cooks/Planners: Sheila Mark, Margy Kramer, Jody Harris, and Tara Gilts. Food preparers, servers, and dish washers: Sheila Mark, Margy Kramer, Jody Harris, Tara Gilts, Ed Peterson, Brandon Elliott, Shawna Stump, Karen Harvey, Maisie Mitchell (AmeriCorps Member serving at O'Bleness Hospital) and Suzy Kaneshige. A little history (adapted from Nov.27, 2015 story): The Rotary Club of Athens has been hosting Food Baskets for the Community for at least 11 years. Susan Urano started with food baskets sponsored by Rotarians and Kroger at Christmas time served to families in conjunction with The Salvation Army. Since 2008 it has been Thanksgiving Food Baskets sponsored by Rotarians and Walmart for families in conjunction with The Athens County Children's Services (ACCS). Twenty-seven families were served in 2008 and it grew slowly to 32 families in 2012. In 2013, we applied for, and received, a matching grant of $1000 from our Rotary District which, with the help of donations from Rotarians and Walmart, allowed us to serve 50 local families in conjunction with ACCS. We continued to serve Fifty local families in a similar way each year from 2014 thru 2016. We are planning to do the same this year! Besides fundraising, organization, and scheduling, this project requires allot of carrying and packing. So get ready to roll up your sleeves and help our Community Service Committee and Betsy Baringer in the coming weeks... |

The Athens Rotary Foundation is holding its 21-st Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Sept. 11-th at the Athens Country Club. The profit raised from this event helps fund the projects, emphasizing the benefit of children, we support in Athens county. Spring will be here soon, and with it comes “Spring Cleaning”. A June 3 yard sale is being planned to raise money for The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International to help us reach our annual goal of $7500 by 06-30-17. (To-date, we are at $3703).
Ladies/Gentleman of Rotary and Your Spouses – please start thinking of things you can donate toward this sale – (Items that would normally be taken to Goodwill, New-To-You, and ReUse).
The “uniqueness” of this sale will be that items will not be priced, but rather “Pay What The Item Is Worth To You”. Not pricing items will be a real time-saver, and studies have shown that oftentimes this leads to more profit. We are even going to take credit/debit cards.
Location: EMBE Acres – 4515 Angel Ridge Road/Athens
(Indoor Arena and Plenty of Parking)
You may bring things to Rotary meetings and Sarah Baker
will take them to the farm to store for the sale.
Or, you may deliver things to EMBE Acres.
Our success will result from:
Lots of Donations from You & Widespread Advertising
Questions can be emailed to Rotary Foundation Chair Sarah Baker:

Terry Efaw will be entertaining members and Guests during the reception and dinner hour at the Athens Rotary Club's Annual Holidays Party on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 at the Ohio University Inn beginning at 6 PM.
![]() Terry Efaw, Guitarist
Terry’s musical Journey began at the age of 13. He was introduced to a friend of his father, the Legendary Athens guitarist Ron Scott. He was fortunate enough to have Ron take him under his wing as he really didn't give out lessons. Ron’s style was based in jazz and chordal modes, so Terry learned a lot about chord work, phrasing, etc.
From there, Terry became aware of Chet Atkins. At the age of 19, Terry was the fortunate winner of the coveted Chet Atkins Guitar Festival, which was an annual event held for amateurs nationwide and some from other countries.

Recent examples are: The handicapped accessible playground at the City's South Side Park; refurbished and remodeled the cabin at Camp Rotan; satisfied our $50,000 pledge to rebuild the Athens High School football field and stadium; and we have pledged $50,000 each to the capital improvement projects of Stuart's Opera House and The Dairy Barn Arts Center. ![]() Athens Rotary has a special relationship with Amesville Elementary (See story on our Amesville Library Project). Linda Cochran, Volunteer Library Coordinator at Amesville Elementary School, and Diane McVey distributed the Rotary Dictionaries to both Third-Grade Classes during their regular library time just a few weeks ago. The 3rd grade teachers are Karli McGrain and Bethany Burley. Students were excited about receiving them and show their appreciation in the photo above (Karli McGrain's class). Other pictures (including Bethany's class) can be found in the photo album here.
Although most of the Rotary Dictionaries were distributed earlier in the 2015-2016 school year, as reported earlier, Linda and the teachers had suggested waiting until the end of the school year so each child had a book of their own for the summer. A story is always read to every class at the start of their library time so there was the opportunity to discuss the Dictionary and each student was shown where to write their name on the Rotary bookplate. The library depends totally on volunteers to have it open four days each week during the school year and on Thursdays during the summer months (same day as food is distributed). If any Rotarian would like to be a regular volunteer, please contact Linda Cochran, or Diane McVey to get connected.
Thanks to Diane McVey for the information and pictures included in this story.

Fellow Rotarian, Harry Kaneshige, Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at Ohio University, passed away at his home in the early morning of Thursday May 26, 2016. Harry joined Rotary in 2006 and was a very faithful attendee of our weekly meetings and participated generously in club activities.
He was born and grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and gave a memorable presentation at one of our noon meetings that included his eyewitness memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the immediate local aftermath. Harry was 12 yrs. old at the time of the attack and was still in bed at about 8:00am that morning when he awoke to popping firecracker-like sounds and Coast artillery...
If pressed to do so, Harry would proudly tell you he graduated from the Punahou School in Honolulu, and then quietly mention that President Obama later graduated from the same High School.
Harry's soft-spoken presence and his generous service to our club and community will certainly be missed. I include a few photos from his recent Rotary service below.

The board has approved details and language for a new membership designed specifically for spouses and partners of current members. It is our goal to encourage family participation and share the Family of Rotary. We look forward to welcoming the special people in your life to the Rotary Club of Athens so that they may serve your community and world along with you. Below you will find the official language to the addendum that we will be voting on, but here are some key points:
1. Spouses or partners will become regular Rotarians and will pay full dues, but will only pay for meals when they are in attendance.
2. Spouses and partners will be welcome to join in all Rotary events and roles for the club, the district and beyond; chair committees; and attend board meetings.
3. Of a potential dissolution occurs or the active member sponsoring the spouse/partner member leaves the club, the spouse or partner member will be allowed to move to a regular active membership with no new membership fees or application.
If you have questions regarding this new membership before the vote, please contact Jackie Collins at jcollin4@amfam.com or 740-592-4496. Votes will be taken by paper ballot. The membership option will pass if two thirds of the Rotarians present at the business meeting vote yes. If you would like to vote by absentee ballot, please contact us to request a ballot via email.

Rotary Invocation

==============
In 1930, Herbert Taylor went searching for a code for ethical business relationships for his company Club Aluminum.
I searched through many books for the answer to our need, but the right phrases eluded me, so I did what I often do when I have a problem I can't answer myself: I turn to the One who has all the answers. I leaned over my desk, rested my head in my hands and prayed. After a few moments, I looked up and reached for a white paper card. Then I wrote down the twenty-four words that had come to me:
He called it the 4-way test of things we think, say or do:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it bring good will and better friendships?
Is it beneficial to all concerned?
In 1940, when he was the International Director of Rotary, he offered his company’s four-way test to Rotary International. Never changed, the 24 word 4-way test remains a central part of the permanent Rotary structure around the world.
And these are the very values we practice; that make us Rotarians (and the reason I participate in Rotary).
On an average day, I don’t meet very many people who live by these values.
Truth matters.
Fairness matters.
Good will and better friendships matter.
Considering others more important than ourselves matter.
The Rotary test is not some set of questions we lay out prior to each decision we make to build a very unique park, develop a community fountain or give dictionaries out (although it is)….
Indeed, the four-way test is something we carry in the pocket of our soul, isn’t it? It becomes a way of looking at the world for Rotarians. It is what sets us a part. Many groups do good things. Many groups do service in their community. Many groups build things but Rotarians do it with a particular philosophy in mind: truth matters, fairness matters, good will and better friendship matter to us and doing things beneficial to all concerned matters. Remember, according to Herbert Taylor, it is the four-way test of things we think, say or do.

The Athens Rotary Foundation Board decided at the April 29, 2016 meeting to offer a paid scholarship to a Rotarian for the upcoming 2016-17 class of Leadership Athens County (LAC). This program was launched in 2006 by the Athens Foundation with support from the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, the Voinovich School of Ohio University, the Columbus Foundation and the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation.
Leadership Athens County begins its tenth class this year. The nine-month program begins with an overnight retreat September 15 & 16 at the Inn at Cedar Falls. The class of typically 18-20 (Maximum is 25) meets each month to explore various aspects of Athens’ economic, political, social and cultural landscape with the goal of developing informed citizens and future leaders.
The scholarship ($750) will cover meals, snacks, room rentals for the sessions and reading materials. It does not cover the initial Retreat overnight room accommodations or travel.
Ask anyone who has participated and they will report that it was an extremely meaningful experience. Several Rotarians including Diane McVey and Tara Gilts are recent graduates and willing to answer questions.
The deadline for the September 2016 Class is NOW so anyone interested should immediately apply. An application is available by contacting Jesse Stock, Program Director (740-594-6061 / jesse@athensfoundation.org) or Susan Urano, Director of the Athens Foundation.

A little history: The Rotary Club of Athens has been hosting Food Baskets for the Community for at least 9 years. Last year, 2014, we received a $500 matching grant from our
This year there were food baskets for 50 families (through ACCS) funded by a $500 matching grant from our Rotary District, over $1,200 in donations from Rotarians (envelope passed at lunch meetings), and $250 from Walmart.
The Community Service Committee is responsible for spear-heading this project. Tom Pyle, the current Chair of the Committee, and Betsy Baringer coordinated the details for this year's project (Betsy has been involved with this project for several years). Besides fundraising, organization, and scheduling, this project requires allot of carrying and packing. Many volunteers are needed and many thanks go out to all those who answered the call.
Thanks to Betsy Baringer and Sarah Baker for the information and photos in this story. You can see more great photos of Rotarians at work on this project in the Thanksgiving 2015 Food Baskets photo album.

![]() The Amesville Elementary Library Project was a joint undertaking by the Athens Rotary Club and The Friends of India Endowment. The $11,166 check included $5000 from the Athens Rotary Foundation and $6,166 from Friends of India. It should be noted that the Amesville PTO also contributed through a local community grant and the full Library Enhancement Campaign raised over $20,000 to update and restore the Amesville Elementary School Library.
Linda Cochran, who is retired from the Athens Public Libraries, leads the project which is now in its second year. For example, she updated the book collection and enlisted volunteers to move shelves and furniture as well as staff the library. Now the library is open from 10-1 on M-Th staffed totally by volunteers and herself. Every class of students has a regular time scheduled each week to come to the library to listen to the reading of a book and to select books to check out for the week.

At an Athens Rotary Foundation Board meeting on July 17th the seven members attending the Board meeting (Diane McVey, David Diggle, Sheila Mark, Channing McAllister, Jerry Mollica, John Miller, and Karen Harvey) listened to an excellent presentation by Rotarian Bruce Wentworth and Jane Redfern, Executive Director of The Dairy Barn, concerning the Barn’s efforts to raise $1,500,000. Their $50,000.00 request was part of the Barn’s Building for a Second Century Capital Campaign. The Second Century Project will significantly alter the main entrance area of the Barn; create a new Gallery Shop where visitors will have enhanced access to the works of local and/or exhibiting artists; create a new multipurpose room; add a catering kitchen; provide enhanced space for child and adult art-related activities; and create an endowment fund to help sustain the Barn over the next century. In voting to provide $50,000.00 over a five-year period, the Rotary Foundation joined the O’Bleness Foundation ($100,000) and the State of Ohio’s Art Fund ($200,000), and many individuals and businesses/corporations in supporting this project.

The winner of the Rotary Foundation split-the-pot contest on February 16, 2015 was Tom Erlenwein, a guest and soon to be proposed member. Attendance was low due to the combination of the Presidents Day holiday and the nasty weather, resulting in a small weekly split of $16. Since this was the initial drawing for the new contest, the accumulated pot was also $16. Tom donated the weekly split back to the scholarship fund and then cut the Jack of Spades from the deck. So the contest will continue next week with only 52 cards remaining in the deck. |

Athens Rotary Foundation Up-date On December 23, 1998, the Trustees of the Athens Rotary Foundation approved its first grant -- $3,215.00 to permit the completion of a tennis pavilion at Athens High School. In the sixteen years since, the Foundation has awarded $207,291.89 in grants to a variety of organizations and projects throughout Athens County. In addition, the Foundation has worked to establish an endowment fund, the income from which can be used to enhance Rotary's giving ability. At present, the Athens Rotary Foundation combined accounts, as held by Edward Jones, total $301,027.94, $80,936.07 in the Gawande Scholarship Fund and $220,091.85 in a general fund. For the first time since establishing the general fund in 1998, the Board has approved a spending policy that will allow us to begin using income from this fund as part of our annual giving. This will bring the amount available for grants in 2014-2015 to approximately $30,000.00, a significant increase since 1998! This increase not only allows the Foundation to increase the amount of total giving but allows us to consider giving larger grants and thereby making a larger impact with our giving choices. As you consider the possibility of making end-of-year charitable donations, please consider the Athens Rotary Foundation as a possible recipient of your largesse. Checks should be made out to The Athens Rotary Foundation and handed or mailed to Dave Diggle, Treasurer, 13368 N. Peach Ridge Road, Athens, Ohio 45701. The Board of the Athens Rotary Foundation |

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a huge success with a sell-out crowd. The food is always good, but this year’s was the best ever. The pakoras, samosas, and chicken 65, along with mango lassi, kept the edge off our hunger during the entertainment.
The performers were incredibly talented, starting with Sharell Arocho, who gave us chills with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Indian music followed with an incredible singer of classical music and a talented classical dancer, The Folk and Bollywood dancers added to the fun and a Colombian classical dancer rounded out the global atmosphere.
The meal was superb, with chicken curry, lamb masala, dal (lentils), saag paneer (greens with cheese), nav ratna korma (9 vegetables), and Kheer (rice pudding). The silent auction alone brought in over $2700. The proceeds will go to the Bella Maria Water Project and scholarships for OU students to study in India. |

1. Good news!!! The drinking fountain base and frost free facet have been installed by the city and the grating for the bricks completed. Thanks Rich. 2. Mike and Sharon Noel have been supervising the laying of the brick sidewalks. Thanks to Rotarians Jody Harris, Andrea Reik, Ed Peterson, Sheila Mark, and the boys from SEPTA. See the photo album below entitled "Brick walks at the Playground" 3. Emilie Wood presented the new plant list, diagrams and pictures of the plants intended for the Ram Gawande Memorial Garden. Some changes were made due to trying to find plants that are deer resistant, won’t over grow, and will bloom throughout the spring, summer and fall. Great job Emilie, AlviMcWilliams and Lowell Verheul. 4. Project Plant has volunteered to purchase the plants. 5. District 3030 in India has donated $1,000 and we need to raise money to match the donation for a fund to maintain the memorial garden. Funds donated to the Athens Rotary Foundation on Ram’s behalf went into the scholarship funds. We talked about selling bricks and plants as a fundraiser. We will come up with the details at our next meeting which is April 1st. Sushi and family will match whatever we can raise. Ram and Sushi’s daughter, Meeta, is getting married and is planning to have her wedding reception in Athens. Meeta will be asking for donations to the memorial garden in lieu of wedding gifts. Thank you Meeta! Money raised will be put into a fund at the Athens Rotary Foundation and the interest from the fund will be used to maintain the garden at the park and if we can raise enough money we can also maintain the area around the fountain. We need to raise at least $10,000 but would prefer to raise $20,000. Jerry says that we can expect approximately 5% return on our investment per year which would be about $500 per year if we raise $10,000 and $1,000 if we raise $20,000. 6. Rich C. will be pricing a new fence along Richland Ave. 7. Rich has contacted a tree trimmer to shape up and remove the dead wood from the trees along the fence line. This has to go before the city tree commission. |

![]() Our club will host the Good Works Friday Night Life Dinner on January 28, 20011. The program is offered to the community each week and is held in the Family Life Center at The Plains Methodist Church, located on the corner of SR 682 and Johnson Road. The purpose of the dinner according to Good Works is to, "build a sense of community within the neighborhood".
Because this is an opportunity for our club members to interact with and learn from a cross section of our community, we are encouraging you to join the community for supper. Rotarians can get in to the church at 4:00 PM for preparation and Dinner is served at 5:30 PM. Club members will prepare all meals for the event. The estimated cost for the dinner is six hundred dollars ($600). We anticipate that a donation of approximately $10.00 per Rotarian should cover the cost of hosting this event. A donation of your time to help in food preparation and your financial support would ensure that this event is a success. A sign up sheet will be available to members at all club meetings leading up to the event. Please contact Calvin James at semaj@columbus.rr.com |

A big THANKS to Alan Boyd, Shawna Stump, and Sheila Mark for answering phones for WOUB's TV pledge drive on Wednesday evening, the 10th. Though we had planned to stay until 11 pm, we left early because there was very little action. It seems that most people are pledging Online. By 10:30 pm, they had reached $9,500 with a goal of $40,000 in the next 4 days. We're glad they are reaching their goal, but if the online pledging is an upward trend, we'll miss this activity. What? November is Rotary Foundation month. Our Rotary Foundation is the "purse" that provides the funds to support the educational, humanitarian and cultural programs of Rotary. Projects like Operation We Care, Gift of Sight, Rafiki AIDS orphanage, Group Study Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotary Centers for International Peace Studies, and other humanitarian projects around the world are all funded by Foundation matching grants. And District Simplified Grants provide matching funds for so many community service projects right here in District 6690.

We currently have a 3 tiered project in the works with Friends and Neighbors Community Food Center. Our project consists of providing food, vitamins and school materials to children in Rural Athens County that are touched through the Food Center. The Athens Rotary Foundation has graciously granted us $1500.00 toward this project, and we would like to match these funds by holding a fundraiser. We are going to conduct a 10-day raffle to help raise money toward our goal. Many of you will remember the 12 Days to St Patrick's Day Raffle that was held some year's ago which raised close to $8000.00 overall. His wife Shalini is a terrific cook, and Indian people are the ultimate hosts. We were in awe of their beautiful house decorated with a fascinating combination of old and modern. We talked and laughed about their experiences in the US, discussed current events, met their extended family, and found the visit entirely too short. I spoke with Giatri on the phone, but didn't get to see her. We did get to say hello to some of the other team members in person. Though we didn't speak each others' languages, I was told that he was praying for a long life for me and my family because he was so grateful for the help of Rotarians in restoring his sight. Another man got a message to us the next day about his excitement and joy at being able to see everything again, "Even a hair from my head!" ShelterBox has issued an urgent appeal for funds to help provide aid to tens of thousands of displaced people in four countries following a succession of humanitarian crises.
Response teams from ShelterBox reacted quickly to distribute emergency aid to victims of the 29 October earthquake in Pakistan. And worsening humanitarian situations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Honduras, and Swaziland have stretched operations to the limit, ShelterBox representatives say.
"This is a life-or-death situation. Families who have lost their homes are in desperate need of shelter and warmth," says Sally Grint, ShelterBox communications and fundraising manager. "Donations are urgently needed to fund further deliveries of aid."

![]() Since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the paperwork for an exchange student has increased exponentially. New policies to protect them from sexual assault and harrassment have further increased the work. To keep our exchange program from being a full time job, a committee has been formed. Dividing the work of home interviews, background checks, and certifications will insure the success of this very important program.

It was a beautiful day for a ballgame. And, with 104 Rotarians and family members present to cheer them on, the Copperheads defeated the Xenia All Americans by a score of 14 to 1. Seth Harris, 6 year old son of Jody, threw out the opening pitch. Alan Boyd sang the Star Spangled Banner. Tickets and soft drinks were courtesy of Curt Allison and Pepsi. They along with People's Bank and Ismail Ghazalah provided enough door prizes that nearly everyone present became a winner. Thanks also to Betsy Baringer, George Smalley, Marjorie Malcom, Sheila Mark, Wilhelmina Lusty, and John Miller for making the outing a great success. See another side of Rotary in a new digital publication, Rotary International Interactive. Each month, experience the mission and fellowship of Rotarians and young adults involved in programs such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, Interact, and Rotaract. The publication goes beyond words to tell Rotary's story using photo essays, videos, and other media. In addition, Interactive offers articles about some of the varied careers of Rotarians and the family of Rotary, as well as unique places Rotarians meet and a blog from a Youth Exchange student. In every issue of Interactive, you also can read advice from the RI president and send in your own questions to him, which you might see answered in upcoming issues. ![]() So far, we are selling 4-9 books a week. We have made a total of $22.73. That is not much until you consider that the work is minimal and it will pay to immunize 38 children against polio. Though books are donated by Edmap, new titles are not often available. We might consider approaching other book stores for their dead stock, but that gets into more work than is reasonable for what we make. The donations that Rotarians have made seemed to sell well. Let's continue to bring titles that will sell quickly. We'll raise the price to $.60, the cost of one immunization.
