Ed Peterson made a motion to put Jackie Collins on a leave of absence  due to her recent delivery of her second child. Cita seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously and will start 1 September.
Emilia announced that she, Betsy Berringer, James Gaskell and Mike Nole will be attending the RI conference for District Grants. All have confirmed their registration.
Emilia asked about her status as a PHF. Her understanding that she needed to donate $103 with the remaining amount of $102 matched by Sushi. Emilia needs to write a check to TRF and will contact Sarah to follow-up on Sushi's offer of matching funds.
Cita requested that the next Membership Orientation meeting be scheduled during a regular lunch meeting to allow the largest number of Red Badges to attend. Mario is to take the lead to set the date and conduct the meeting in his role as past president.
A recommendation was made to have Mario, as the Membership Chair, approach Russell Chamberlain to see if there is any interest in a Corporate Membership for his company.

Treasurer’s Report:        Dave Diggle
  • The clubs financial summary is included below. Dave's comment was that the club is in good shape financially and the only area he expressed a concern was the amount still outstanding in the member accounts. He would have liked the members to be more up to date on their dues.
  • Dave will terminate Emilia's LOA and will also follow up with Mario to set the date for the termination of his LOA.

International Service Report:        Cita Strauss
Cita reported that there were no planned student in-bounds or out-bounds. The switch to short term visits has made the task somewhat less taxing but she has stated that she is considering stepping aside and letting someone with closer contacts with the high school students take over.  She has agreed to stay the rest of the year. The Board will need to seek her replacement.

New Generations Report:           Brandon Elliot
Interact
September 6th, met with Geoff Thacker at Athens High School.  Meeting scheduled for that day had been moved to the following day.  Geoff stated that elections would be held and service activities would be discussed.  Mr. Thacker would send an email with the updates.
Rotaract
Received email correspondence from TJ Cappel who provided a mini report.  “We have gotten a lot of interest through emails since we are on the OrgSync website as the Rotaract Club. I am planning tabling next week to keep recruiting because we still need people, so far we really only have 10 people who have come to some meetings. All of our paperwork has finally been processed by Ohio University and I will be attending training sometime this week so we can start getting our funding. Other than that it is all about recruiting right now because we need more people.
RYLA
I will be coordinating with Roe Mauro, RYLA District President to discuss growing the local area youth Rotary participation.  Roe may be a possible speaker for Interact club
Rotary Youth Exchange
We are just doing short-term exchanges at this time.

President Comments:                Emilia Alonso-Sameño
  • International proposal from Friends of India
Emilia discussed a project to assist with a project to provide clean drinking water to schools in India. While all agreed this was a worthwhile project it was agreed that our club will be involved with the water project in South America for a second year and could not take a leading position on another project. Financial assistance is possible and further discussion is required and should involve the Foundation.
  • Helping with Honduras project
There was also discussion of projects in Honduras. Our ability to undertake additional projects is limited and probably would not involve a leadership role. Further discussion will be required to determine what actions the club may take.
These two projects will likely fall under the next president's purview.

  • Team up with other Athens county clubs about Vinton County’s need for a grocery store
Cita discussed the need to assist the Vinton Co. residents with making fresh foods available now that the only grocery in the county has closed. Currently fresh produce is made available once a week at a drive thru. Cita is continuing to work with the Vinton Co. development organization on a plan. At this time there is not specific role for our Club. Dave Diggle mentioned that the Foundation can only work within Athens Co. so will not be able to assist on this project.
  • Historic memory of the Athens Rotary Club
Emilia presented the Board with a history of the Athens Rotary consisting of several slides and a written document. This was originally produced by Carl Stemple and covers our history back to the 1930's. After discussion Emilia agreed to follow up on how to convert the slides to CD's in order to preserve their historic value. Emilia will discuss where to house the documentation with Rodger Rollins. In addition to this presentation material Dave Diggle stated that the Athens Library has historic information on Rotary that he believes they will not be willing to house much longer. Cita agreed to follow up with the Historic Society to see if they had an interest in the material. It is possible that both sets of historic information could go to the Historic Society.
