ROTARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES -- Oct. 4, 2010 The Athens Rotary Club Board of Directors met at noon on Thursday, October 4, 2010, in the conference room on the third floor of the Castrop Center. The following Board members were in attendance: Bob Troxel; Betsy Barringer: Calvin James; Karen Harvey; Cita Strauss; and Bodie Stewart. Dick Conard was also in attendance. On a motion by Cita, seconded by Betsy, the minutes of the meeting of September 2, 2010, were approved as submitted. On a motion by Karen, seconded by Cita, the following leaves of absence were granted: Jan Garske, October 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010, and Andrea Lewis, October 1, 2010, through June 30, 2011. On a motion by Karen, seconded by Betsy, exempt status was granted to Ram Gawande, effective October 1, 2010. There is a new member orientation tentatively planned for the first Sunday in November, namely November 5, 2010. All Board members should plan to attend. Time and place will be announced at a later date. Karen Harvey agreed to speak to Mike Noel about Bill Beamish's continued attendance at meetings as a guest. Floyd Lancia's Brazil grant, as sponsored by the Anthony Wayne Rotary Club of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was explained. Floyd is a PDG of the Rotary district in Northeastern Indiana and a friend of Ram Gawande's. On a motion by Karen Harvey, seconded by Bob Troxel, the Board agreed to support the project by accepting Ram's contribution of $500.00 and passing it on to the Anthony Wayne Club as a contribution from our Club. Bob Troxel announced that passing the envelope at a Monday meeting to assist the Athens Red Cross's post-tornado disaster efforts netted $1,249.00. Bodie Stewart up-dated the Board on his vocational service efforts. He is working toward finding Athens High School students who will attend District 6690's Ethics And Leadership Seminar on November 11th. This may be difficult as it requires students missing a day of school, and all students recently missed two days of school due to tornado damage. He and the Interact officers are continuing to recruit new Interact members. There were 20 at the last meeting. Sarah Baker could not attend the meeting but sent word that she is postponing the Nelsonville train ride until Spring.' Cita reported that Orhan, the Inbound student from Turkey, is adjusting very well to both his host family (the Marks's) and to school at Athens High. One confirmed Outbound student, Daniel Moran, has been recruited for next year, and there is a possible Outbound that Cita is working with. Outbound applications for next year are due by November 4th. Calvin has spoken with Sharon Weiskopf, Good Works, and, after learning that the only available Friday meal preparation would be the Friday after Thanksgiving, decided to wait until after the Christmas holidays to choose a date. The Board suggested January 28th as a good possibility. Calvin himself will oversee the dictionary project. He will get a quote on the cost for another distribution and prepare a request to the Athens Rotary Foundation. Jody Harris was unable to attend but passed on the information that the neediest Athens County school district is Trimble Local. Some discussion ensued concerning possible assistance. Bodie suggested "learning to read" assistance, perhaps as a project of the OU Rotaract Club. She also reported that the handicapped accessible project committee will meet again on the 13th of October. Betsy announced that the District 6690 Foundation Seminar will be held on October 16th at the OU branch campus. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Diane McVey. The meeting adjourned at approximately 1:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Karen Harvey, Secretary
