  July 1, 2009

To:  Shawna Stump, President

From:  Diane McVey, Foundation Chair

This is a report of The Rotary Foundation activities of the Rotary Club of Athens.

President Shawna Stump set a goal of $6,500 for annual giving to the Rotary Foundation this Rotary year.  At the end of June, $7215 (110%)has been contributed to annual giving by club members.  Restricted giving of  $2410 as well for Polio made a total of $9625.00 recorded for the 2008-2009 year.  Recognition points have matched new contributions up to $500 for club members wishing to become new Paul Harris Fellows.

Overall Athens Rotary (club #3664) has 165 Paul Harris Fellows with 65 being current club members, 5 Benefactors and All-time Giving of $329,907.12.  Two new PHF have been added this year and several Multiple PHF members awarded this year.

A club in India and District 3030 worked with the Athens Rotary Club as a partner for a Matching Grant project in southeast Ohio.  The joint project was to fund textbooks for the Trimble School District as a literacy project with major funding from India, District 6690 and the Matching Grant from TRF.  This unique project with India Rotarians assisting an Appalachian Ohio school district was written up in the Rotarian Magazine.

The Club reached the goal set by our club to retire a balance of $11,820 (January 2005 per Rotary International) last year.  The Friends of India/Athens Rotary Club Dinner-Fundraiser was designated to Polio Plus and $2510 donated.  With an additional $200 million added to the original $100 million grant from the Gates Foundation as a challenge for RI to match, it is expected that next Rotary year Rotary clubs will be setting new goals to contribute to polio eradication in the world.  Each Rotary club is asked to contribute at least $1000 per year in the global effort to eradicate Polio.

Several strategies to encourage Every Rotarian Every Year giving by club members is used each year.  Sheila Mark provided short presentations from the Rotary International website and video library including Bill Gates presentation to the International Assembly with the additional Challenge Grant.  The club website has a foundation section, email reminders are used in Foundation Month, and member bills include a reminder to include a donation.

Yours in Rotary,

Diane McVey
